Submission of Assignment 3 deadline

As mentioned in class, all assignment 3 submissions will be as follows:

Tuesday 5th May 2009 from 10:00 am - 12 pm in Lab2005. No late submissions will be entertained.

Online course

As mentioned in the last class, there is a talk being held this Monday (20/04/09) from 130 pm to 530pm. All students are encouraged to come and attend.

As such, class will be transferred to an online module. Please go to this site:

The course is about vector graphics and bitmap images as well as colour. Please go through the whole course as it will be part of your final exam.

You will also be tested next week Monday (27/04/09).

Mid-term exam schedule

Students in Group 1 come to class at 400. Exam starts at 415 – 445

Students in Group 2 come to class at 445. Exam starts at 445 – 515.


If you do not show up after 5 minutes of the start of the quiz, you will not be able to take the mid-term exam.

If you missed the quiz, you will get a 0 for mid-term unless you have an MC in accordance with university regulations.

Assignment 3 - Birthday Card

Assignment 3 – BIRTHDAY CARD (20%)

From the list of birthday cards list in the blog, you are required to re-design the card and to add elements of local culture into the cards. The cards shall depict how birthdays are celebrated in your culture.


Requirements

(1) Select one of the cards in the blog you like (see MMLS).

You are to re create them using local culture elements BUT maintain the layout structure. In other words, if on the birthday card, you see a girl standing on a chair, you may change the elements (from a girl to a malay/Chinese/Indian/boy or girl, from a chair to a rotan chair or a rose wood chair etc) but the layout must be the same, meaning the girl or boy must be standing on the chair.

(2) You should also change the background setting, colour to bring out the local culture. However, the greeting text on the card must stay the same.

(3) The overall message from the card must also stay the same. In other words, if the card is about having a joyful birthday, the local elements, settings and colour must also depict a joyful birthday but in a local culture settings.

(4) Size of the illustration – Overall A3 size but one side will be the image or illustration and the other will be the greeting message. Just like a real card.

(5) Printout the illustration and present it like a real greeting card. Please make sure the printout is a professionally done as possible. You can use thicker paper to depict a real greeting card. It can be portrait or landscape.

(6) Include your name, ID and group at the back of the card.

Documentation to be done on the BLOG (10%)

(1) Include the RESEARCH you have done on the local elements of how birthdays are celebrated (add the web links).

(2) Write a short description of your idea of how birthdays are celebrated in your culture and how you are going to modify the original birthday card that you have chosen from those provided in the blog.

(3) Include designs, sketches, references or images that you use to create your new culturally correct birthday cards, tools that you used and the final output.

(4) Tools used. You are to EXPLAIN the tools that you used and learnt from the tutorials and those that you have EXPLORED on your own.

Submission:

(1) Students must submit the Illustrator file and title it studID_bday.ai. Date of Submission: Week 12 (Week of the 27th April, 2009) in tutorials to tutorial Group Leader.

(2) The student name, ID and Group must also appear inside the document. Marks will be deducted if you do not enter your name, group and ID properly. Marks will also be deducted if there are no name, ID and group.

(3) All class submission guidelines must be followed. Not following these requirements will mean a reduction in your marks in this exercise.

(4) Any copying or similar illustration may result in the students getting an automatic "0" mark. NO PLAGERISM

(5) No blog entries or limited blog entries may result in deduction of marks or may result in an overall mark of 0 for the assignment. So please follow the requirements listed above.

Criteria for marking:

(1) The concept itself and the proof of concept which are the sketches, references and research.

(2) Use of the tools - the proper and creative use of the tools

(3) Design of the illustration and the story it tells.

(4) Write-up and documentation must be in proper English.

(5) Detail description of the process.

(6) Quality of the printing and display.
